DODECACANE ARMCHAIR

Modern. Simple. Complex. What more could one ask for when contemplating the furniture that will decorate one's forever home? The dodecacane is a masterpiece of design that invites feelings of romanticism and modern design to any space. The design of the chair accentuates the natural form of the body, creating a feeling of relaxation when used. The cushion is hand-made and hand-painted by a local artist to add to the feeling of customization and comfortability.

The choice of a geometric shape was inspired by a toy I played with as a child. Being able to manipulate and build 3D shapes with simple 2D pieces is how I came to create a dodecahedron. This inspiration stuck with me through high school. This chair finally came into creation last year. I wanted to create something simple - yet artistic which led me to integrate fine details in this complicated structure.

This began with looking at both 2D and 3D shapes. Trying to make a chair out of something unusual, using experience with geometry and woodworking, looking at the natural lines and vertices of the dodecahedron, adapting from a previous attempt and looking at ways to modernize the design, resulting in a light and airy structure that compliments the body and accentuates the art of design.

With its unique geometric design, this chair resembles the 3D shape of the dodecahedron. The twelve sided structure was reimagined as an armchair with nine sides. It is inlaid with cane and five legs which are painted to accentuate the bold colored cushion. With the complex configuration of this chair, yet the simple execution, it adds intrigue and subtle feelings of romanticism while also giving recognition to modern design.

With this chair's resemblance of a dodecahedron, every part of the form had to be precise. The five sided pentagon used to create the outside panels was angled when cut and skillfully glued together. Each panel was created as a hollow frame to host inlaid cane done by hand. The base was then made as a decagon and holes were drilled into every other side for the five legs to be placed. The legs are hand-turned and hand-painted maple. The seat was then fitted with a custom-made painted cushion.  The legs were also hand painted to bring an overall sense of cohesion. The chair was then finished with a non-toxic and sustainable finish.

Dodecacane changes the perception of the chair. Abandoning the idea of 4 sides and challenging the space it fills while still feeling light and open. The see-through panels of cane allow air to pass through. Sitting in the Dodecacane gives a feeling of comfort, surrounding your body and allowing your arms to effortlessly drape over the sides.
